La Loma is a farm in Agua Negra, Pitalito, Huila, and it plays a central role in Rodrigo Sanchez Valencia’s more experimental coffee work. Since acquiring the farm in 2011, he has used it not only for cultivation but also as a place to explore varieties, fermentation systems, and new processing ideas in a more deliberate way. La Loma grows cultivars such as Caturra and Bourbon, and while the farm is relatively modern in its current form, it is closely tied to a family-based approach to production and a long-term commitment to quality. This lot reflects that identity well: it feels like a coffee shaped not just by origin, but by purposeful design at every stage after harvest.
What makes this X.O Rum Barrel Washed especially distinctive is the processing. Sweet, carefully selected cherries are used to build a fermentation environment supported by cultured microorganisms and rum-fed inputs, creating a highly controlled and expressive profile. After fermentation and washing, the coffee is dried and then aged in a Colombian oak rum barrel, which adds another layer of aroma and texture. This kind of method can easily overwhelm the coffee itself, but here the process seems aimed at balance rather than excess. The result is a coffee with a strong barrel identity, yet still enough clarity to let the structure of the lot come through.
In the cup, the profile opens with a whisky-like aromatic lift, carrying warm wood, sweetness, and a barrel-toned depth. Dark cherry follows with a richer fruit character, giving the coffee a concentrated, slightly liqueur-like impression rather than a bright fresh-fruit acidity. Vanilla rounds the profile out, adding softness and a creamy sweetness that helps connect the spirit-like aroma to the fruit and body of the cup. Even as a light roast, this coffee leans toward richness, atmosphere, and lingering complexity. It is a striking lot for people who enjoy layered, process-driven coffees with both sweetness and presence.
